Diagnose KIA Sportage AC Fails

Car model: Kia Sportage GLs

Components: 2.0L engine and automotive transmission

Mileage: 54,214 miles

Auto problem: While the air conditioner can work properly when driving at a fast speed, its outlet is over hot when the car idles.


Auto diagnosing procedure:

I first check the problem syndrome and find out that when the temperature at the outlet is 4 Celsius degree when the car is driving fast and the temperature will rise to 9 Celsius degree when the car stops and idles. I inquiry the car owner about its repair history, and learn that its compressor has been replaced because of noises, and the entire air conditioning system has been cleaned at that time.

According to the syndrome, I guess the problem could be caused by problems such as coolant leak, FATc control module fault, three-way pressure switch problem, compressor problem or circuit problem.

I hook an Autel Maxidas ds708 up to automotive engine system and air conditioning system in a bid to get some error codes. But no error code is retrieved from these two systems. Then I read the air pressure of the system when the vehicle is idling. The highest air pressure is 2501 kPa, while the lowest air pressure is 350kpa, which are both higher than the average level. This is usually caused by too much coolant or bad condenser heat dissipation. The coolant level is normal, and then the problem is likely with the condenser. A photo of Autel DS708 follow:


It is abnormal for a fan to run at low speed if the air pressure is that high. So I plug off the 3-way pressure switch, connect the switch with short stub, and then the fan immediately runs very fast. I use a MST-2800B multi-meter to test the switch and find out bad connection on one of the switch. I fix the connection, the fan can run normally, and the air conditioner can work properly then.
